Modern Warfare II Makes $800 Million

modern warfare ii makes $800 million
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II becomes the fastest-selling release for the franchise, making over $800 million worldwide.

Activision Blizzard announces today that just three days after its release, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II makes $800 million dollars. This release marks the fastest-selling in the Call of Duty franchise. Bobby Kotick, CEO, Activision Blizzard, said the following: “Thank you to our talented team that has created magic through extraordinary artistry and technology, and to the global community of players who find joy and connection through Call of Duty. This milestone belongs to them.”

Modern Warfare II Makes $800 Millions, Blowing Away The Previous Franchise Record

The new release blows away the previous franchise record set by Modern Warfare 3 in 2011. That record was $775 million in the first five days of its release. However, $775 million in 2022’s dollars would be $1,022,615,909.20 according to an inflation calculator. So technically Modern Warfare 3 still holds the record but I’ll let Activision Blizzard celebrate Modern Warfare II’s achievement.

I’m not surprised the newest release sold well because Call of Duty has a dedicated fan-base. And since Battlefield 2042 was a disappointment, many first-person shooter fans were looking to Call of Duty to bring it regarding fun gameplay, especially when it came to the multiplayer. The reviews of the game is mixed, as critics give it high scores while players give it an average rating. It appears players are unhappy with the single-player campaign and problems with certain maps in multiplayer.

The Game Sees New Player Records Too

The Activision Blizzard press release states Modern Warfare II also set the record for highest player participation for unique players and hours played, but didn’t provide those numbers. Checking out PlayerCounter, however, I see at the time of this article’s posting there are 183,141 players online. When I check Steam I see there’s over 174,000 people in the game right now. So the game is quite popular, and could have broken the previous record.
