Nudity Returns To Tumblr (But Not Porn)

nudity returns to tumblr
A new update to Tumblr's Community Guidelines allows its users to post pictures containing nudity. However, this update still bans porn on the platform.

Nudity returns to Tumblr per today’s update to the platform’s Community Guidelines. This move allows its users to post pictures containing the naked form, mature subject matter (which I will discuss in more detail in the article), and sexual themes. All the user has to do is tag the media with the appropriate Community Label.

Nudity Returns To Tumblr: What’s Does That Include?

What can Tumblr’s users post now since they can post naked bodies? Well, for one, they can post pictures depicting a naked body. Those pictures can be photos or drawings. This change is to allow creativity flow on the platform since Tumbrl is all about its users expressing themselves in various ways.

This change also includes the ability for users to post material containing Sexual Themes, such as erotic writing.

Nudity Returns To Tumblr: What’s Excluded?

Although nudity returns to Tumblr not, that doesn’t include porn. The platform was known before for hosting explicit videos. Its former policy was “Go nuts, show nuts. Whatever.” Unfortunately, this would prove problematic for the platform because most online users thought Tumbrl was a pornographic website, like Pornhub or XVideos. This made monetization difficult because credit card companies don’t like dealing with porn. And if a site can’t make money easily then it will go out of business. That’s one of the reason why Verizon sold Tumblr to Automattic for $3 million dollars in 2019.

Tumblr’s CEO Matt Mullenweg says the following about why the platform cannot allow porn on the site at this time: “That said, no modern internet service in 2022 can have the rules that Tumblr did in 2007. I am personally extremely libertarian in terms of what consenting adults should be able to share, and I agree with “go nuts, show nuts” in principle, but the casually porn-friendly era of the early internet is currently impossible.”

How Will This New Change Work Now?

If users want to show “mature subject matter” they have to apply the appropriate Community Labels on their posts, like “Mature” or “Sexual Themes.” This allows other users who filter their dash to avoid seeing that content.
