Google’s Interview Feedback Response Time Is Long!

One of the most frequent questions I get in my email inbox or in the comments in my YouTube videos is about Google’s interview feedback response time. All types of people – from those interested in applying for a job at the company to those who already interviewed – want to know the average response time. Unfortunately, it’s long! Why is that? Allow me to explain.

Why Is Google’s Interview Feedback Response Time Long?

Reason #1

The first reason Google’s interview feedback response time is so long because the company doesn’t move fast regarding hiring. Oh yes, their recruiters are quick to reach out to a potential candidate, and set up an interview within a week or two. After the interview, though, the company focuses on gathering all the data to make a good hiring decision. That takes time: From a couple of weeks to longer than a month. Depending on how slammed the hiring manager is, it could take a couple of months for the candidate to receive an offer or a rejection. Which leads me to the second reason.

Reason #2

The second reason for a long response time is the hiring panel taking longer than normal to input their interview notes. Fortunately, this problem is getting better as all interviewers must upload their notes within the system fourty-eight hours after the interview. If that doesn’t happen then the system will hound that interviewer. And if the interview ignores that, then the recruiter will personally reach out to the interviewer. So why are some interviewers slow to upload their notes? That leads me into the third reason.

Reason #3

The third reason candidates wait for a long time to learn about their fate is because the interviewers are busy with their daily tasks. Unfortunately, interviewers don’t get to neglect or stop their daily job functions to interview candidates or type up their interview notes. They have to fit that into their work schedule. Thus, if something critical drops into the ticket queue, or a critical bug needs a patch, that employees will focus on that instead of providing interview feedback. By the time those interviewers get back to uploading their notes, days could have passed, if not over a week.

Final Reason Why Google’s Interview Feedback Response Time Is Long

Finally, the last reason why Google’s interview feedback response time is long because of the volume of candidates. And this is for various departments.

I’ll focus on the data centers since I’m a Data Center Technician. I believe all the data centers worldwide have or had job openings for multiple positions since the beginning of 2024. Many of those positions were entry-level. Thus, more applicants applied than usual.

In addition, it doesn’t help that people like me publicize the Data Center Technician role on YouTube or on social media or on their personal website. That can drive tens, if not hundreds, of applicants into those open roles. And if dozens of those applicants are worthy of an interview, it takes a long time to schedule the interview, find interviewers, perform them, and provide the feedback to the recruiters.
