Navigating The Tech Job Market: Companies Are Picky And Slow

My main objective with my website and my YouTube channel is to help people get a job as a Data Center Technician. And I must be truthful when it comes to getting that role or any role in the Tech Industry: Navigating the Tech job market sucks right now. Becausee the companies have the control. Thus, they are picky and slow. So with that knowledge, what can job seekers do to have the best chance to not only get a job interview, but the actual job? I have a few tips.

Tip #1 On Navigating The Tech Job Market: Get Ready To Wait

A few years ago it took very little time to not only get an interview after submitting a resume, but for job seekers to get an offer. In 2024 that’s no more as it’s going to take weeks to get an interview. After the interview it’s going to take more weeks, if not a month, to get a decision. Unfortunately, some aren’t even getting that as some companies never contact the applicant after the interview.

Why is this happening? Too many applicants for each open role due to the number of layoffs in 2023 and this year. It doesn’t help that many sought-after jobs are in a large cities with popular companies because that draws in more applicants. Thus, it’s going to take the company time to go through all the applications, bring in the indviduals they want to interview, and then go through all the feedback to see which person or persons they will give an offer to.

Because of this the only thing job seekers can do is be patient and wait and follow the next tip while waiting.

Tip #2 On Navigating The Tech Job Market: Get As Many Interviews As Possible

Although companies are picky and slow with their job applicants, I suggest job seekers to not do the same. Navigating the Tech job market in 2024 is much different now. Gone are the days when one could pick their dream company, apply for one or two roles there, and wait. Now job seekers should apply not only to their dream company, but also companies that they wouldn’t mind working at.

By going this route these individuals put themselves in the best position to gain multiple interviews at different companies. Thus, this tactic opens the possibility of multiple job offers as the best outcome. The least outcome is reducing the amount of time applicants have to wait for a decision.

Tip #3: Consider A Tech Contracting Company

If job seekers have trouble getting an interview with a Tech company I suggest using the services of a Tech contracting company like one of the following:

  • Robert Half
  • TEKsystems
  • Kforce
  • Modis
  • Apex Systems
  • Insight Global

That’s just a small list as there are many more companies. There are many benefits of using contracting companies:

  • Getting in contact with a recruiter is usually easier
  • Recruiters tend to spend more time with job seekers to determine where they best fit with their clients
  • These companies can have hidden roles not listed on their website

One major downside of working with contracting companies is that they may not be able to place people into a permanent role. However, if that is the case then the recruiter will let the individual know beforehand.

Tip #4 On Navigating The Tech Job Market: Refresh Job Skills

One of the best ways job seekers can differentiate themselves from the rest of the competition is to refresh their job skills. That may mean getting an IT certification or taking certain classes online. Yes, I understand this takes time and money, but the return on investment is worth it. Companies now need employees who know the latest technologies and will continue to learn those on their own. So it’s best to go ahead and start that now instead of waiting to learn that on the job.

Final Tip: Keep Hope Alive

I want to end this article on a hopeful note because I see some job seekers getting depressed by the tough job search. Yes, it’s rough out there, and it sucks at times, but job seekers have to keep hope alive. People will get jobs in the Tech Industry; it’s just going to take longer than before. Don’t listen to those online who only talk of doom and gloom. Listen to those like me who are transparent about the reality of job market and offer a plan so people can act accordingly.
